Fifteen years ago, I met Peggy Van De Plassche in the polished corridors of a corporate high-rise. We were two ambitious professionals, our days filled with spreadsheets and strategy meetings, our evenings often stretching late into the night as we climbed the corporate ladder.
Over the years, I've watched in admiration as Peggy navigated her path with a uniquely unapologetic style. Maybe it’s her characteristic French flair for not giving a you-know-what… but she's always been comfortable calling things as she sees them, being authentically herself, and charting her own course – all while acknowledging the system we're operating within. Her journey has been a constant source of inspiration for me as I've evolved from a dutiful Rule Follower to the Rule Breaker I am today.
After 20 years in the financial services and technology industries as an executive, venture capitalist, board member, advisor, entrepreneur and public speaker, she went from “Finance to Fungi” and now guides people to improve their mental wellness and performance through a regimen of alternative medicines.
Peggy's transformation from finance exec to educator on psychedelics offers valuable lessons for all of us seeking to redefine success on our own terms.
Here's three things that I learned from Peggy about breaking the Rules and why her story matters, even if you're not planning to ditch your day job for a spiritual awakening anytime soon.
The Corner Office Isn't the Be-All and End-All
Peggy had achieved what many consider the pinnacle of success—a prestigious title and a substantial paycheque. Yet, she found herself unfulfilled. Instead of settling for societal definitions of achievement, she embarked on a quest to align her career with her interests and values.
This journey wasn't about impulsively abandoning ship, but rather a thoughtful exploration of possibilities. She was the one constantly trying new things - private equity, investing, advising - even getting involved in animal welfare projects. Peggy consistently challenged herself, testing new avenues that resonated with her evolving sense of purpose.
What I learned: True success isn't about reaching a particular position or salary level. It's about finding work that aligns with your values and brings you fulfillment. Sometimes, that means having the courage to step off the conventional path and forge your own.
Perfection Is Impossible (and Unnecessary)
In her new book, "The Microdose Diet," Peggy addresses the top reasons why personal transformation often falters. She astutely observes that we can't all become a hybrid of the Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Cruise, and Serena Williams—nor should we aspire to.
Instead, Peggy advocates for becoming a better version of yourself—not a perfect one. This aligns perfectly with our Rule Breaker philosophy: rejecting unrealistic standards and embracing our wonderfully flawed, constantly evolving selves.
What I learned: It's about progress, not perfection. Setting impossibly high standards often leads to frustration and burnout. Instead, focus on continuous improvement and celebrate your progress along the way.
Self-Care Is About Getting Closer to Your True Self
Peggy's approach to self-care epitomizes the Rule Breaker philosophy. It's not about transforming into someone else or following the latest wellness trends. Rather, it's about uncovering and nurturing your authentic self.
Her teachings emphasize this principle—that genuine well-being stems from self-acceptance and intentional growth. Whether it's through her exploration of psychedelics for personal development or her advocacy for mental health, Peggy consistently emphasizes the importance of connecting with your true self.
What I learned: Effective self-care isn't about changing who you are. It's about peeling away the layers of societal expectations and reconnecting with your authentic self. It's a journey of self-discovery rather than self-improvement.
Peggy's journey reinforces a crucial lesson: the most fulfilling life is often the one we design ourselves, free from the constraints of others' expectations.
Whether you're contemplating a career change, reevaluating your personal goals, or simply seeking a more authentic way of being, remember that breaking rules doesn't always mean grand, sweeping changes. Sometimes, it's the small acts of self-trust and the courage to define success for yourself that make all the difference.
Peggy has always been an inspiration for me. She has dared to question conventional wisdom, listened to her inner voice, and crafted a life that truly resonates with her unique values and aspirations. I hope she can be a model for you to too.
Keep well-rounded,
✌️

P.S. I’m prioritizing shipping over perfection, so this post may not convey all my thoughts perfectly. I’d love comments or questions to keep the discovery going.
P.P.S. With thanks, as always, to my Junior Associate, Claude Sonnet (trying something new out and liking it!)
P.P.P.S I’ll be back with the third instalment of my anti-Lean In manifesto soon (but I’m guessing I’m the only one who is tracking that it isn’t done…)
