Last year on International Women’s Day I felt more frustrated than inspired.
My beef was that the numerous events on my feed offered only gentle support for women’s causes or celebrated those that had achieved excellence while obscuring the real progress we still need to achieve.
So… this year I’m doing something about it and hosting my own International Women’s Day gathering.
Allow me to share more 🙂
First, what’s the point of IWD?
International Women’s Day began as a movement for radical social change.
The right to vote, good working conditions, better wages, ability to hold public office - those were the things on the agenda of early IWD protestors. Thankfully with our fore-sisters efforts, equality for women has dramatically improved.
And… there is still more to work on. ‘Cause you know… the patriarchy.
The change I want to make
Designing my IWD gathering, I thought about my sphere of influence.
I would love to wave a magic wand and some of the most pressing inequalities (domestic violence, genital mutilation, abortion rights among other things)... but I am not steeped in those issues nor influential in making change.
What I do know about are the social norms and systems that influence our personal identity, our mental health, and life choices. And let’s be real, they don’t really promote caregiving or self-care to the level of accumulating wealth and status. That has a huge impact on women.
Here’s What We Will Cover
Let's talk about loving who we are instead of who society tells us to be.
You see, society has always done a great job of defining the ideal woman. In the '50s the ideal was to be a caregiver. Then in the '80s we were ceiling-breakers. Now, we're supposed to be "Leaning In" while also making Instagram-worthy lunches.
Except... that's a recipe for burnout and guilt.
This International Women's Day, let's take back our ideal identity and discover how to love ourselves on our own terms.
🙋♀️Who should join:
This is for you if:
You love your career AND being a caregiver AND want space for self-care
You're trying to blend ambition, compassion, and personal needs in this hustle and bustle world
🌱Things we’ll cover:
We're gonna have real-talk about:
--> How to identify what is 'enough' against the limitless pursuit of 'more'
--> Self-care methods that don’t involve spending all your money at the spa
--> Embracing caregiving as a proud aspect of our identity
--> Finding fulfillment internally, instead of through professional trophies and accolades
You know… the light stuff in life.
🕺Vibe:
Imperfection, vulnerability and compassion. This is by and for people in the thick of it.
I promise no magical stories of effortless balance or sugar-coated success stories.
Deets:
📅 Date: Friday, March 8 (International Women's Day!)
⏰ Time: 11 AM PT / 12 PM MT / 2 PM ET
📍 Location: Virtual (Sweats encouraged, breakfast stains get bonus points!)
⏳ Duration: 60 minutes
One last request (besides joining, obvi): what else is important for us to cover?
You've probably already started counteracting those pressures I’ve mentioned. Email me back or share in the comments to help seed our discussion on March 8th! Click here to register.
Keep well,
J
P.S. I’m prioritizing shipping over perfection, so this post may not convey all my thoughts perfectly. I’d love comments or questions to keep the discovery going.
P.P.S. With thanks, as always, to my Junior Associate, ChatGPT-4.0 AND Gemini Advanced (just started testing both against each other… I feel kind of disloyal in a weird way)
